Carl Jung Personality type formula reflects:

  • the way in which we are energized
  • the way in which we structure, live our life
  • the way how we are gathering information
  • the ways how we are making decisions

Energizing preferences or attitudes reflected by personality type formula:

There are two ways a person can be energized. Extraversion (E) is the preference related to taking energy from outside, external world of people, things, activities. Introversion (I) is the preference that relates to taking energy from inner world of impressions, ideas, emotions.

Living preferences reflected by personality type formula:

Judging (J) preference assumes structured, planned and organized life. Perceiving (P) relates to living in more unplanned and flexible way.

Two ways we gathering information:

  • Sensing (S) refers to the preference for paying attention to information that is perceived directly through the five senses.
  • Intuition (I) refers to the preference for paying attention to something that might, or could be rather than what actually exists.

These two mental function individuals use for perception.

Two ways we use for making decisions:

  • Thinking (T) refers to decisions based on logic
  • Feeling (F) refers to personal, subjective, values oriented way of making decision.

These two mental function individuals use for judgment.
Although individuals uses all four mental functions, each person prefers to use these functions specifically. And personality type formula reflects interaction of those functions.

According to Carl Jung there are eight psychological types:

  • Extraverted sensation, EI
  • Introverted sensation, IS
  • Extraverted intuition, EI
  • Introverted intuition, IN
  • Extraverted thinking, ET
  • Introverted thinking, IT
  • Extraverted feeling, EF
  • Introverted feeling, IF

Diagram reflects all described previously.

Personality type formula

Listed eight types reflect possible dominant functions.
Katharine Briggs and Isabel Myers developed Jung's theory. They asserted that for balance each individual has the auxiliary function. According to them without auxiliary function person will only take information and never make decision, or always haste to decisions and do not stop to take in information. The auxiliary function balances Introversion for Extraverts, and Extraversion for Introverts.
Taking it into consideration they got 16 possible personality types. Each one reflects preferable dominant and auxiliary functions.

ENFJ ENTJ ESTJ ESFJ

For Extraverts:

If you are Extravert (E) you use your dominant function with outside world. So if your last letter (outside world indicator) is J then your dominant function is T or F.
Auxiliary function balances the dominant, so it will be introverted one - S or N. If your last letter (outside world indicator) is P then your dominant function is S or N. Auxiliary function is T or F.

For Introverts:

Introverts use their dominant function in inner world. If your last letter (outside world indicator) is P then you use Perception function in outside world. Your auxiliary function will be S or N. Dominant function will introverted one T or F.
